What Barrier Index is

An independent editorial shopping guide. We publish shortlists for a specific job (fragrance-conscious skincare with clear sizes). We are not a store, not a marketplace, and not the seller of record. Checkout and shipping happen on their store.

How a shortlist is made

Editors choose the angle — for example “apartment sofas under $1,000” or “gentle cleansers under $20.” Those become pages with a search query and optional Catalog filters (price, color, size, and other attributes the Catalog API supports).
Results are live — when you open a page, we ask Shopify’s Catalog for matching products right then. We do not keep a permanent product index or stale price cache.
You buy elsewhere — “View on store site” uses the Catalog’s outbound URL unchanged (including attribution parameters). We never take your payment.

What we optimize for

Clear size / volume when the brand publishes it
Fragrance-conscious or sensitive-leaning listing language when present
Honesty about limits: attributes only appear when Catalog provides them
Not medical advice — we don’t diagnose or treat skin conditions

How we make money

We may earn a commission if you buy through product links, at no extra cost to you. That does not change which pages we publish: shortlists are editorial. If you’re enrolled Catalog promoted placements appear later, we label them. See the full affiliate disclosure.

Who runs this

Barrier Index is a small independent project. It is not operated by Shopify as a storefront. Merchants looking for catalog tools can see our quiet For merchants page (Data Doctor / Metafields Editor).
